People are starting to talk about the coming rain with a bit of longing in their voices - they mention things like 'going troppo' and 'mango madness' - it's hotting up and getting a bit stickier, although apparently this is nothing compared to how humid it will get.
There's likely to be another month or more of this weather till the rain starts - could be sometime late in October or even into late November or December. There was a one off downpour a couple of weeks ago. Before that, it hadn't rained in Katherine since April. On the afternoon it rained, I was hanging out with a friend, Luke Kerr, a teacher at Frankston High and his yr 11 students who were on their Alice Springs - Darwin school camp. They offered for me to join them for a cheaper than normal helicopter ride. Although it was beautiful to be caught in the sudden downpour, the rain unfortunately came 5 mins before I was about to have my ride and the helicopters had to be grounded - bummer!
This green tree frog settled on my back door step a couple of weeks ago. Apparently they're quite territorial and I'm likely to see the same frog again. but haven't seen him again since that night. There's a chance he lives in the pipes of my toilet and may turn up in my loo (eeeww!).
Last weekend I was in Darwin, both for a break and also to meet my Darwin colleagues on the mon/tues. Highlights were:
- watching Hawthorn win ze grandfinal in a superb, closely fought but well deserved win. go Hawkes!
- hanging out with some 2o (?22) year old US marines on the friday evening - such gentleman, really!
- the Mindel night market
- shopping and having a haircut
- going out for brekky and good coffee!!!
One evening I witnessed a decent size shark being hauled up onto the wharf, caught by a group of local teenagers with a basic rod. It took 4 adult men to pull it 8 metres or so up from the water, after a rope with a massive multiple-pronged hook was thrown down and wedged into the sharks side (yeah, nice!). The boys were so proud as you can see and the story of that catch is sure to become a legendary tale.
